Today we visited Neuschwanstein Castle. It’s the castle Cinderella’s castle is based off of. It was built on the ruins of another abandoned castle by King Ludwig. King Ludwig had grown up going to his parents’ castle that you can see from his new one. When he became king he wanted something grander all for himself, so he built Neuschwanstein. King Ludwig was a recluse, and no one was allowed to see his castle until long after he died. He died right as it was finishing construction and made all his servants promise to keep the castle locked up and not let anyone in. However, it was eventually taken over, and now open to the public. We saw some renovations going on, and they are supposed to be complete by 2020.

After our hike to the castle, we headed to get lunch at a traditional German restaurant. I got spätzle, which is basically a German Mac and cheese. They our fried onions on top and it was really good.

After lunch we went to a small town called Oberammergau. They are famous for putting on the Passion of Christ play. It only happens every 10 years and runs five days a week for 6 months. Only the residents of the town are allowed to act in the play. It’s held in a large outdoor amphitheater without any microphones. The theater was built so the acoustics eliminated any need for microphones. We had a short walking tour and got ice cream at a place our guide said was the best in the world. She wasn’t wrong.

On the tour we saw a lot of buildings with murals painted on them. It really looked like it was out of a fairy tale. Some were painted to look 3D while others had stories.
